In a field of almost endless possibilities for mixing and mastering music at home, what really makes a difference, what it practically boils down to is creating focus and making decisions. Creating one’s own focus – for technical, conceptual, expressive and for aesthetic reasons. Making a particular decision, rather than necessarily following standards in music production. How one approaches mixing and mastering is crucial in lo-fi conditions, when working with imperfect speakers and headphones, for example. Ways of thinking and envisioning may easily pave the way of choosing technical tools. What is really important? What is present? Is it audible? Where one wants to direct listeners’ attention? How do the layers correspond in terms of time structures, timbre, and frequency? What makes the overall movement? Umbra’s workshop taps into these issues by working directly with projects brought in by the participants and responding to their interests.
